6 Mistakes That Cause Weight Gain

Many people who want to lose weight often say things like “Even drinking water makes me gain weight” or “I starve myself but still gain weight.”

When dieting or simply trying to maintain weight, certain mistakes—whether intentional or unintentional—not only prevent weight loss but can also cause weight gain!

1- Skipping Main Meals and Relying on Snacks

Skipping main meals and trying to build a routine around snacks can lead to consuming small portions with big calories.
Remember: snacks and small bites should only be consumed when needed between meals and in controlled amounts.

2- Replacing Water with Tea and Coffee

If you quench your thirst with tea and coffee, don’t forget that you’re actually losing water this way.
Both tea and coffee cause water loss in the body. For weight control or dieting, water consumption is just as important as the foods you eat.
Always drink one glass of water for every cup of tea or coffee!

3- Skipping Meals During the Day and Sitting at Dinner Overly Hungry

If you start the day thinking “I’ll eat healthy” and confuse healthy eating with starvation, the uncontrolled calories you consume at dinner may harm your progress.
Everyone needs a certain daily calorie intake to maintain a healthy life. If you don’t meet that need during the day, your body will try to make up for it in the evening.

4- Believing Protein Doesn’t Cause Weight Gain

Carbohydrates are often blamed during weight loss. But our macronutrients are divided into three: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. While protein has nutritional value differences, it still contains calories like carbohydrates.
Overconsumption of protein can also lead to weight gain.

5- Switching to “Light” Products but Increasing Consumption

Choosing healthier alternatives while shopping is a good habit. However, believing that foods labeled “light” are completely healthy or calorie-free is a mistake.
Increasing consumption of such products will inevitably cause weight gain.

6- The “All or Nothing” Approach

Many people, once they decide to lose weight, make the mistake of cutting out many foods from their diet. Very low-calorie or restrictive diets often result in giving up and returning to old habits even more strongly.
The best approach is to identify habits that may cause weight gain and, for the foods you love, allow occasional consumption with portion control instead of eliminating them completely.
